Writing a Testimonial

Thank you very much for agreeing to write a testimonial for me.

Here you can find some guidelines and points that make a powerful testimonial, and help paint the full picture of our work together and the experience you take away.

A testimonial is not just a memento for both of us but potentially a source of hope and inspiration for someone else who may see themself in your words and decide to try the deep transformational work you have just experienced.

When writing a testimonial, your own words, your writing style, and your inspiration are the most precious guidelines I can give you.

Please write the way that feels most natural to you. There are no expectations or limitations of the length, you can be as brief as you want, or as elaborate as you want.

The questions are just guidelines, none of which ask for personal details of course. They are probably not all relevant for you. They list the elements of the final story and help paint a full picture of your journey.

They also help the reader distinguish the Before and the After, i.e. the old you vs, the new you.

The questions to consider:

  • What pain point/event/diagnosis was the deciding factor in your seeking my help?

  • Why now, and why me? What was the deciding factor in committing to working with me and using my approach?

  • How long have you struggled with that issue?

  • What treatments or therapies did you try, if any, before working with me? How long for? How much did they help?

  • What were the issue(s) we worked on?

  • Please state the changes/transformations you have experienced or are experiencing now as a result. Think of it as a before and after comparison. Be as specific as you feel comfortable while honouring your own need for privacy. Your feelings and especially the way you view yourself really matter here.

  • Are there any additional changes you have noticed in your life, especially over time? E.g. your attitudes or relating to life and people around which you attribute to the session(s), or general observations about yourself and things in general?

  • Are there other symptoms or issues that we did not work on specifically, but for which you had started noticing positive changes as a side effect of the work on the main issue? We had mentioned some of them in our summary call.

  • Is there an expected, or an unexpected, life situation or episode in which you realised the benefits of our work?

  • (How) Do people from your environment for the changes that you are experiencing?

  • (How) Did your relation to yourself and your life change?

  • How did you find me as a therapist, how did you feel during the sessions and afterwards, in between them?

  • Why would you recommend my work / who do you think my work is best suited for?

Finally, I would ask for some guidelines about how to sign you.

You don't need to share your full name, or your real name, or any detail that would reveal your identity.

However, being specific helps, because my other clients see themselves in those who came before them.  Real or made-up name/nickname, (age), profession, city/country you're from are all useful.

Can you please provide some?

Last but not least, feel free to write in any language that feels most natural and expressive for you, I can later have it translated.

Thank you very much.
